So I’m giving in and finally starting to read such (long) classics in manga as Inu Yasha, Bleach, Detective Conan, Vagabond, Naruto, Blade of the Immortal, One Piece, XXXholic and Tsubasa RC.
I only got into manga three or so years ago when my partner dangled the first Ah! My Goddess comic in front of me and then lured me in with the No Need for Tenchi (and subsequent All New Tenchi Muyo) and Gunslinger Girl comics.
I grew up reading Marvel and DC comics for many years and then branching out to Darkhorse, Image, Top Cow and the imprints of bigger companies like Vertigo and Wildstorm. I stopped a few years ago when the story lines of the big two just got too ridiculous for even me to handle…so yeah about 15 years of love and devotion and now the characters just happily take up a corner of the very large hang out in my brain.
I’ve been watching anime since Robotech first aired itself on the Sci-fi channel and stayed up to view uncensored Akira and fell madly in love with the bloody violence and beauty of Ghost in the Shell. I’ve kept up with anime since I was a teenager and don’t show signs of stopping, though again, I’ve only recently gotten into anime that is really long. I tend to avoid shows that go over 52 episodes, that’s just so much to buy if I’m viewing it sight unseen and with the current shaky economy I can’t really afford to just buy whatever looks interesting anymore.
So really the point of this post is that the economy needs to get back on its feet so I can continue to support my addictions in the style to which they have grown accustomed to! Right now I’m all cheapskate and only sticking to franchises I know when I’m purchasing or things I’ve viewed at least half of beforehand and are madly in love with (not that it stops the infamous careening out of control to a terrible ending syndrome some anime have).
Sometimes it sucks not having an endless income. Oh universe weep for your child, she is denied her many many many many many many shiny objects of love. Surely this is a mistake I mean because after all, the universe revolves around me right?
Getting back to the “real” point of my post…. *cough* My megalomania kicked in there for a second, it’s easier for me to shell out dough or more accurately borrow some of those above mentioned manga and try out a franchise that way, than to shell out money for a dvd and not be sure I’m willing to commit.
